drawing for the degree show
UNIT 3 PROPOSAL
In Unit 3, I am planning to create painting, printing and installation. Regarding the research, I continue to seek out the language as a tool of authority and power within the media.
In terms of the method and materials, I want to approach various methods because my concept is very complex (related to socio-political view) I would like to develop a digital work such as concrete poetry, and study a relationship between image and text that experimented during unit 2. Also, I tried to make the installation such as white-brick works and sound, but I felt it is insufficient because I tried to make these things first.
For the Online degree show, I will put painting and printed works (like a similar format with Unit 2. To understand my idea, I will make mind map. (might be more bigger than present work) In addition, I will put white-brick and sound (hanging from the ceiling) on the floor.
Thus I have to study the methodology. I would like to further study the methodology of artists Jenny Holzer and Glenn Ligon and incorporate it into my work.
UNIT 1
The distorted view _ Where does the distorted view begin?
Personal memory and identity are being distorted in the contemporary world. Because of the acceleration of new technologies and social media platforms, the fact is being turned into fiction. We are living in an era of “Post-Truth” This has been my experiences, as certain truth were falsified. This made me realise that the ‘truth’ is often subjective and can be manipulated by new technologies. Therefore, this issue of ‘fake news’ and distortion of the truth will form the basis of my practice this year. I will use the notion of DISTORTION in order to create the painting and installation that explore this idea.
Keyword: Identity, Truth, Distortion, Prejudice, (Social, Political) Movement
- Aims & Objectives
The overarching aim of the project is to explore whether personal memory and identity are correct or distorted. My aims are:
* To observe and record this phenomenon in which the thought and opinion gradually expand on their own and divide fact and fiction in society. As the concept is related to the politics of ideas, I will reference the political and social events related to articles that have opposite perspectives of an event (also, personal psychology and interviews).
* To experiment with and develop my method (i.e. installation, painting, screen printing, metal, wood, text drawing) in regards to how to convey this concept intuitively. I intend to make a space where the audience can interpret the concept directly and experience it immersively.
* To create the work that connects installation and painting. The first stage of my project will be to look for this connection in which I intend to define my painting meaning and apply this to the installation, studying the multi-layered installation and the abstract painting.
* To ask the relevant questions to the audience. The questions are:
Are our thoughts true?
Are our thoughts and ideas not narrow-minded?
Since when have we had this prejudice?
Or have we realized since when we had this?
If our thoughts are tilted, why?
What do you think we can do with our thoughts?
Do distorted ideas control me?
Can we be correctly aware of one event?
If correct, can you prove correct?
Can we accept someone with different ideas?
Aren't we ostracizing people of different ideas?
Do we respect the idea?
When you see articles, what judgment can you make about an article that is written differently despite the same event?
Do you think the judgment is correct?
Can you assert that judgment?
We always have to make judgments in real life and face conclusions based on that judgment. However, are we making the right
decision? Are we trying to do that?
Can you accept that conclusion?
Are you confident of facing that conclusion?
Do we know who we are?
* To deal with this query whether it is true that we believe and share, if not, how we distort the truth, also, if we know the truth, is it possible to accept it.
The main visual aspect of the work will incorporate drawings, paintings, installation, and sounds. I will need the large scale (notably, a high ceiling) to be flexible as I aim that the audience looks up the work.
- Ongoing theory
Young people usually look for information via the internet. The identity of our information is established by recognising, judging and accepting it. Algorithm online creates search potentials and sometimes distort information.
* The Filter Bubble
If this information is looked at in detail, we can ask the questions in the search engine, but we cannot have the answers at our disposal. Namely, we maybe receive filtered information through the internet algorithm. For example, when two people search Trump on Google at the same time, they can be faced with different results on the internet. This piled information recognizes for us and then it takes control of our thoughts and identity. I will research the book of 'The Filter Bubble’ by Eli Pariser(2011), chairman of the U.S. civic group 'Move on', warned the information bias in 'The Filter Bubble'. It could occur if political and commercial logic is involved in the algorithm to filter information. His concerns are becoming a reality. Internet users are quickly getting customized information through Amazon, YouTube, Facebook, Google, and Naver. However, the fact that they are using only one piece of information creates prejudice and distorts their values.

* An Echo Chamber
An Echo Chamber means that if you listen to people who have the same meaning in a closed room, you think that is all you have. It refers to the phenomenon of strengthening one's faith by only believing and sharing information similar to one's ideas and opinions. It is often held in places where people with similar ideas, such as the Internet community and social networking services, are gathered. In the Echo Chamber, truth is far away, and if it is not the same as one's own beliefs, it is not treated as valuable information. As one of the reasons behind the fake news, experts cite 'the echo chamber'. This can be found on Facebook, for example.
I think that I have been at a crossroads where there is no choice in any direction. In the flood of countless information, I found myself in a situation where no direction could be set, and I was afraid of choice. Nevertheless, if you look closely, this is not just about me. Furthermore, looking at people who only repeat their own words and close their ears, I came to think of me, you, us and society. In a society that gradually diverges between extremes, I want to catch our state such as these theories by experimenting with different materials and ways of painting, sounds and installation.
- Material requirements
Before entering the MA course at Camberwell, I usually painted on canvas and also drew figurative images such as a forest. However, as I realised that image can make meaning limited, I am trying other methods to extend the concept. So far, I have been dyeing cotton(thin canvas) to make abstract paintings. Also, I have thought about if I have to keep the painting or not. Without the painting, using the painting element itself such as colours (the light can be colour) and brushstroke can make the installation. The materials I will look at and use are newsprint and learn how to use sound projections to create the immersive installation.
- Methods
The distortion of the body is most noticeable in the previous artworks such as Edvard Munch, Francis Bacon. However, as my work expresses the identity changed by me or others in society, I think that I need the sharing space, walking around the artwork and seeing the multiple aspects of the artwork. I will work on the main installation, several drawings and paintings.
- End product
I want to make a space where can feel the echo chamber using the compelling artworks through the large scale hanging from the ceiling, and connecting there to the installation which include abstract painting(also, the repeated sound). In addition, I want to express the distorted shape (i.e. the distorted world) by using canvas(or paper) and metal(or wood). Through this, I will explore the distorted view itself.
