Presentation with Ian Monroe and Leora Brook
After the presentation, Ian and Leora gave feedback to me.
- Leora said, "Now your concept is still broad. Do you want to express political, social or personal issue? You should look at one area and keep more rooted in your area. For her, my work seems to express how we see with different perspectives, and you are interested in the physical form and space."
- Ian said, "It does not express the political view."
So they said "Add your own experience"
It means I need to speak 'who am I?' and add my personality, such as experience, feeling and thoughts, on my works. I agree with their opinions. I concerned about these opinions.
So I have to create the objects that reflect my own experience about my concept. So I will do drawings.

About the truth
When I considered the distortion, I am wondering how I define the truth. So I made my sentence;
"The truth is transparent but black."
The meaning of this sentence is that, eventually, we can see the truth inside and behind it because it is transparent. However, the truth can connote other opinions, so I represent that it is black that can absorb all colours.
And then I made this work, using this sentence. The work is a combination of painting and installation. The audience can walk through between artwork. I intend to ask the question about the truth for the audience through mystery sentence and visualised coded sentence. Overall, my work hopes to collaborate with the audience, encouraging them to face a distorted view and reflect themselves.

The poem
I wrote a poem with my emotion about the truth. My feelings in this poem reveal an unjust, stuffy, sad and angry state of the distorted reality. I chose a poem that could express my anger indirectly in figurative letters. The poem of open interpretation, which was allowed even if I didn't finish the sentence or even if only bizarre words were listed, was a suitable way to express my calm anger. Also, I think that the audience can enter their thoughts between word and word or sentence and sentence in the poem. In this sense, I think a poem is a proper way to show my thoughts about the truth.
[1]
Into the black
The truth is transparent but black
Blackwater would be like the truth
wavelike truth
, with a gust of wind
colourful winds
It will submerge us all
No, in turn, we all would submerge it
There are no reasons
, just belief
Like strong but weak
Like no choices
Like our mind
We and truth stand here
We are going to the misdirection
We need more, behind it
[2]
Blackwater from the quietest place
intoxicated with pleasure
various permeated motions
It would be burnt away
ferociously
ferociously
ferociously
like the blackwater
It is not always the same
It can be changeable
Someday it will be water,
Someday it will be black
Nonetheless,
we trust
The back of the truth
, with more power than what you think
Again, blackwater from the quietest place
[3]
Ideally, this is a fake news
Ideally, the error is the terror
Ideally, I know a nothing
Ideally, I think everything
Ideally, I could look back
Ideally, it can be reversible
Realistically, this is a fact news
Realistically, the error would be hidden
Realistically, we hold something
Realistically, we are calm
Realistically, we used to reflect ourselves
Realistically, it is obviously irreversible
[4]
Stand up, tongue
I understand
Behave like the status
as if the real memorial
I share it
I believe you
Be aware of danger
Be aware of fiction
Be aware of mind
We've known, already
Cut somebody down
Kill someone
in heavy rain, storm
Finally, we can see, never
Using this poem, I will make visual poetry and sound works.

About the poem
I printed out my blurred poem and fixed it using the nail. In the MP3, the sound is played the recorded voice in which someone read the poem very slowly. I aim that the audience cannot read it directly, but they can interpret it through the sound. I think the direct printed text can convey my thoughts strongly and it is just giving them a clear answer. However, it is not my goal. I intend that, via this process, they can put their thoughts and ideas about the perception of the truth between word and word, sentence and sentence.

Conversation with Geraint
Today, I showed my poem to Geraint and talked about the research question in the artist statement. After he read my poem, he suggested artists such as Jenny Holzer and Christoper Wool.
Following the study, I became interested in the way in which perception, perspective and distortion of written (or spoken) words and symbolic objects have fundamentally transformed how we define and identify the truth today. I present a visual realm using printing, painting, drawing, poem, sound and installation to reconstruct such events.
Also, he said that when he read my statement, there were questions about which perception, who distorted. So, he suggested;
"How public discourse in post-truth era effects on perception/understanding of truth."
"How social networks enable a distortion of truth in a post-truth era."
Group Crit and Discussion with Ian
Ian and I had a conversation about research, and he questioned me how dealing with the truth in my research. I talked about the reality that truth cannot be changed, but can be changed by perception and distorted. I also have thought about the truth; which truth and how to deal with the truth.
He asked if there was an artist so far with truth and suggested dealing with perception rather than dealing with the truth.
I came to realize that after the group's critic with him, I realise I focus on the perception of the truth.

The visual poetry
Oil on Canvas paper
Oil on Canvas paper
To express my poem, I painted black oil on canvas paper and then I wrote my poem. I intended to express my emotion of the calm angry by using hidden writing. After I painted it, I realised it is an interesting painting, and I want to keep going on this method.

I tried to paint other methods by using colours and writing. I tried to show hidden writing and my feeling through painting, such as the act of painting colours and scraping with a pencil or the act of writing and erasing. To be honest, I felt it is an old and fake method in which I deal with my emotion through simply colours at that time. However, the act of writing and erasing is interesting to me. Thus, I want to adopt the act method of writing and erasing into my work later.

Project 2. Sentence / Word / Dictionary
frame words and redaction
words and their dictionary meanings
words and their dictionary meanings
(an experimental work)
words and their dictionary meanings
(an experimental work)
A frame is a method of sorting out some aspects of an event, highlighting them according to the writer's perspective, inducing specific interpretations, evaluations or answers, and linking different aspects.
Man is originally an 'intellectual miser'.
"Most of us see the issue after we define it first than defining after we see it."
Because of these characteristics, the frame of the press has a lot of influence on us.
The effect of a media frame is to be seen.
1. Manipulation of consent
2. Oversimplify
3. Mohawk Belly Technique: By indirectly criticizing, it creates a negative public image.
After I Realised that the press language distorts people's thoughts and behaviours, I came up ideas;
"24 sensational words from Korean and British newspapers."
"24 words to disappear in the next generation."
Dirty trick - the form of existing dictionary (A4 size)
Dirty trick - repeated and overlapped meaning of 'dirty trick' (A4 size)
intentional - omitted and arranged meaning of 'intentional' (A4 size)
Brutality - repeated and overlapped meaning of 'brutality' (A4 size)

24 sensational words from Korean and British newspapers
I am currently working on a pre-work to reflect on the meaning of words. By searching for the intentional language that appeared in the newspaper and presenting the dictionary again, we want the audience to read, understand and see the meaning of the word again. At first, I intended to present the meaning in a dictionary to appear directly. However, I omitted, overlapped, or arranged words, the meanings like an object, to indicate that we could look at the word distorted and not accept it in its meaning itself, the meaning of the word.
Also, I referred to the form of concrete poetry. And I will install using nails to express my thought and feeling.
After Geraint's talk, I have tried to think about "how develop / how look / why choose newspaper and that words"
I think I was confused newspaper and language. So, I think I don't think newspaper from where, but I should think that "why I choose this word and by what criteria is it set." In conclusion, I focus on the language!!
I decided to explore how language act on as a tool of authority and power in culture.
To be specific, how language as a tool of authority and power affect the perception of truth in the post-truth era?
I am interested in the below characters of the language.
- authoritative
- demagogic
- propaganda
So, I want to express the meaning behind the language in the dictionary and the sense of loss I feel about it.
In terms of the installation, through an increasingly downward configuration, it suggests that a person's perception slowly becomes blurred and even destroys identity over time.

White brick
I tried to seek more visual methods using words and my thoughts, with the printed works together. So what comes to mind is a brick. Brick can be stacked and thus walled and bounded. It is also an object that can collapse and change.
Brick can build a wall and indicate direction. As an object that organizes the flow, I realized that it was an object that could visually represent my thoughts. In this sense, I decided to use bricks as objects. The ordinary bricks were too heavy and hard work to dig out the letters, so I decided to make bricks using plaster. And I want to put the selected words that can put the audience's thoughts in between words in that or influencing them with repetitive sounds, not simply visual expressions. So I made a brick out of plaster with the first step. And I tried writing, but I changed my mind to make monumental bricks rather than the hand-writing, and I am also studying the method.
